Do You Need Different Glasses for Laptops and Phones? Settle that Debate.

Your readers seem perfect for a novel or mobile phone but leave the laptop faintly soft — or the reverse. That is not a faulty pair. It is two different distances asking for two different powers, and here is how to decide whether you need one pair or two.

It is one of the most common complaints from new reading-glass wearers: the pair that makes a leaves the computer screen slightly blurry, so you find yourself leaning toward the monitor — or the pair tuned for the laptop screen makes fine print on your phone just a touch out of focus. It is tempting to conclude the glasses are wrong. They are not. You are simply trying to make one power do two jobs at two different distances, and the physics of focusing just does not allow it.

Why one power may not be adequate

A reading power has a natural distance. The rule is simple: a lens of power P brings your sharpest focus to roughly one divided by P metres from your eyes. Thus, a +1.50 power means that the sharpest focus at 1/1.5 = 60 cms from your eyes and so on. It is distance specific. Therefore, the power that is perfect for one distance is, by definition, slightly off for another — and a mobile phone screen and a laptop screen usually sit at genuinely different distances:

   A book/newspaper or mobile phone is typically held around 35–40 cm away.

   A laptop or desktop screen usually sits further out, around 55–65 cm, at arm’s length.

That gap of 15-20-odd centimetres is exactly enough to matter. A reader tuned for a 40 cm phone places its sharp zone too close for the screen, so the monitor sits at the blurry far edge — and you unconsciously crane forward to meet it. A reader tuned for the 60 cm screen leaves the phone close, so small print softens. Neither pair is defective; each is simply optimized for a different distance.

The eye strain it causes as you age

Forcing the wrong distance through a fixed power is not just mildly annoying — it is one of the ingredients of what clinicians call digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome, which affects a strikingly large share of screen users; some estimates put its prevalence at half or more of regular computer users (Sheppard & Wolffsohn, 2018 - see below). Its symptoms fall into two families: those driven by the focusing and eye-teaming system working too hard — blur, tired eyes, headaches — and those driven by a dry ocular surface, because we blink far less at screens. Critically, correcting your near vision for the actual working distance is a recognised first-line remedy: matching the power to where the screen really is takes a large part of the load off your eyes (Sheppard & Wolffsohn, 2018).

So — one pair or two?

The honest answer depends on how your day is split:

   If almost all your near work is at one distance — mostly mobile phones or books, or mostly a screen — one pair, tuned to that distance, is all you need.

   If your day genuinely splits between close reading and an arm’s-length screen, two single-vision pairs are usually the most comfortable and precise solution: a stronger pair for books and phone at 35–40 cm, and a slightly gentler ‘computer’ pair for the screen at 55–65 cm. Because single-vision readers are inexpensive, owning two correctly-tuned pairs is sensible rather than extravagant — and it is far more comfortable than forcing everything through one compromise power.

There are also all-in-one lenses — progressives and dedicated ‘office’ or ‘computer’ lenses — that cover multiple distances in a single pair, but for someone whose only issue is near vision, they are expensive, difficult to adjust to and I daresay, an overkill. For the pure presbyope, two simple, correctly-powered readers usually win on both comfort and price.

How to find your two powers

Finding the pair is a two-part version of the standard reading test. First, establish your phone power the usual way: hold small print at a measured 40 cm in good light and find the power that stays effortless for a full minute. Then repeat the test with the page held at your actual screen distance — sit as you really sit at your desk and measure it. The screen power almost always comes out gentler than the book power, frequently by a quarter to three-quarters of a dioptre. That difference is precisely why the in-between quarter-steps matter: your ‘computer’ power is very often an odd quarter-step that ordinary shelves skip.

Habits that help whichever you choose

   Set the screen a touch below eye level and about an arm’s length away — this is both easier to focus on and gentler on the neck.

   Follow the 20-20-20 pattern: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for around 20 seconds, to let the focusing system relax.

   Blink deliberately and keep light comfortable. Reduced blinking at screens is a major driver of the dry-eye half of digital eye strain (Kaur et al., 2022).

If you also wear correction for distance, or your near vision differs noticeably between the two eyes, it is worth a professional eye check before settling on powers (American Optometric Association). But for a healthy presbyopic eye, the fix for the screen-versus-book problem is wonderfully direct: give each distance the power it actually wants — including, when the maths says so, a precise quarter-step — rather than asking one pair to do two jobs it was never able to do.
